The exhibition do TEATRO ao RETRATO by Eurico Lino do Vale , brings together works from the collection of the Lisbon Municipal Archives | Photographic and a selection of photographs from various institutions and private collections.
The curatorship by António Pedro Mendes and Sofia Castro aims to highlight moments in the photographic production of Eurico Lino do Vale, which show a theatricality and a constant scenographic aspect in his modus operandi .
The images that the photographer creates and records, which make his or her gaze unique, echo practices in photography studios, thus highlighting the photographer's guidelines, the effective use of light, the use of backgrounds, props and other elements, which construct environments and narratives led by the subjects portrayed.
Eurico Lino do Vale is a photographer who thinks like a stage director, being responsible for all aspects related to the scene he intends or is interested in photographing. Actively involved in the construction of the image, he acts like a stage director, creating the set design by preparing the space, using props and costumes, arranging the actors and using a lexicon that transforms the photography studio into a stage.
The exhibition includes large-scale analogue prints, current prints and two projections based on series of photographs created specifically for the exhibition, which spans three rooms in the Lisbon Municipal Photographic Archive and where typologies such as self-portraits , family portraits and other “staged” images from series never shown to the public can be found.
